Green Square Public School welcomes students and the community

Green Square Public School and Community Spaces in Sydney’s inner south is officially open. Designed by BVN and constructed by Hutchinson Builders, the four-storey purpose-built primary school was delivered in partnership with the City of Sydney and School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW). The integrated school and community spaces bring essential infrastructure to Australia’s densest and fastest-growing neighbourhood.

Green Square Public School and Community Spaces is a central part of the Green Square Vision. It carefully balances layers of public and private use, local history, urban context, scale, character and identity. The project brings these complex and interconnected elements together to create a vibrant place where the community can thrive.

Last week, the school welcomed students from Kindergarten to Year 2 into new learning hubs, designed to cater to diverse learning and teaching scenarios. Eventually, 600 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will populate the school, with facilities dedicated to student use between 6 am and 7 pm on weekdays. Outside of these hours, parts of the school will be open and accessible to the broader community for meetings, functions, sports and events.
Across Levels One and Two, seven learning hubs centralise home bases around meeting rooms, wet studios and presentation studios. Adjacent verandas offer sheltered, outdoor learning spaces where small groups can break out in the fresh air. The rooftop engages little learners with active playscapes and an educational garden by Turf Design Studio.

On the prominent corner of Zetland Avenue and Portman Street, a shared multipurpose court is a beacon for team sports and community gathering. Emblazoned on the court’s walls and ceilings is the immersive large-scale artwork, The Belly of the Feast, by First Nations artist and Archibald Prize winner Blak Douglas. With rippling watery hues and dancing dugong motifs, the artwork references the historic unearthing of 6000-year-old dugong bones in nearby Shea's Creek — evidence of First Nations occupation in the area.

An immersive mural by Blak Douglas called The Belly of the Feast enlivens the multipurpose court with First Nations storytelling.
It is just very exciting to see such a fabulous project completed. And I think this is going to be the community hub for Green Square in the future.

Designed to feel both safe and playful, the school welcomes children and families while supporting broader community functions and gatherings with active street frontages that energise the precinct. Layered with artwork and landscape and enriched by contemporary learning environments, the landmark school and community facility ensures children and all-ages can safely access spaces to play, learn, gather and grow.

Clear pathways and discreet security lines assist in managing flow before, during and after school while a design approach that aspires to create a playful and welcoming atmosphere ensures both school children and the community feel a strong sense of belonging.
