A vision to deliver an iconic, sustainable and pedestrian-friendly campus, with major refurbishments and new buildings

The UTS City Campus 2020 Masterplan provides guidelines for $1.2B worth of sustainable development, including 80,000m2 of new area in four significant new buildings. The proposal involves major refurbishments of existing facilities and the construction of new buildings to expand the campus by approximately 25 percent, accommodating future student and staff growth.

The plan incorporates UTS’s vision to revitalise the precinct for the benefit of students and residents; to create an engaging campus that is embedded within the community, rather than preserving the fortress-like nature of the existing campus. As part of this vision, the plan addresses issues such as the fragmented nature of the existing campus, the lack of quality open space and the need for a clear pedestrian network with connections to adjacent transport, commercial and cultural hubs.

The plan includes teaching and research spaces, student housing, a cinema, cafes, art gallery and options for a new library on the main city campus.

Sustainability is at the core of the approach and proposals for significant new services infrastructure include a cogenerated power plant, campus-wide black water system with sewer mining, and on-site treatment of all stormwater.

In association with Durbach Block Jaggers, BVN has also designed the new Thomas Street building, which has emanated from this masterplan.
