This new facility is located in the new South Australian Health and Biomedical Precinct on North Terrace.

It will house a new Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB), the University of South Australia’s School of Pharmacy (PMB) and a major science public outreach initiative Science Creativity Education Studio (SciCEd).

The new building consists of 12 levels plus a mezzanine, lower ground, basement and rooftop plant. The floors are linked by three interconnecting atriums which move between the building’s north and south side. The first atrium is on the northern side and connects the ground level entry of the building off North Terrace with SciCEd studio floors and the Health Clinics Floors. The second is on the south side and connects the 3 levels of the School of Pharmacy. The third atrium is also on the northern side and connects the CCB Floors. The main entrance to the building is located off the new Urban Park, a vital green space on the precinct, which energises the area, supporting an integrated precinct of academic, researcher, clinician, student and the public. The Urban Park will connect this building with Univesity of Adelaide’s School of Nursing – two important health teaching facilities within the Biomedical Precinct.

The strategic drivers for the new research, teaching, clinical and public interface environment that formed the basis for the design were:

  •        Science and learning
  •        Collaboration and community
  •        Clarity
  •        Flexibility and adaptability
  •        Wellness and sustainability

The building is designed to utilise the strength of its external structural frame in both the form, articulation and sunshading, creating a single form that responds to its very prominent site between the River Torrens and the City of Adelaide.
