Design Competition, Full Architectural Services

This project includes the retention, restoration and reimagining of the well-known Sirius apartments in Sydney’s Rocks. The existing apartment building, designed by the NSW Government Architect’s office in the late 1970s, is a valued surviving example of the brutalist architectural style. Sirius will be an exemplar for adaptive reuse, working with the original architecture.

Through considered sustainable upgrades, replanning and additions of new elements of the building will be repurposed as contemporary apartments carrying the bold architectural character of the original. A reworking of the building’s base will knit the building and its community into the surrounding streets and pedestrian pathways of The Rocks, enabling public access, activating laneways and providing new retail and commercial opportunities. Key heritage spaces such as the communal Phillip Room will be retained and integrated into the new design.

The existing concrete facade will be restored, complemented with the addition of copper boxes, a modern interpretation of the original concrete boxes. The fifth elevation has also been reinstated with the original concept of a garden roof.
