Description

Creating a prominent gateway to Sydney, offering a memorable waterfront destination with a range of dining, retail and event spaces

The Overseas Passenger Terminal, located at Sydney’s Circular Quay, provides a berth for luxury cruise liners as well as a number of dining and event facilities for the public. BVN’s work on the Overseas Passenger Terminal was carried out in two stages. The practice submitted the winning entry in the 1983 Overseas Passenger Terminal Competition and was then commissioned in 1984 to investigate how to shorten the under-used terminal building by 30%, and free-up more of the waterfront for public access.

The project transformed the 1950s concrete slab into a transparent, inviting space and gateway to Circular Quay. In dismantling the concrete cladding, an elegant steel structure was revealed underneath. This original skeleton was retained as part of the new design, expressing a much lighter and less obtrusive building. The public can enjoy viewing platforms on the upper-level promenades and stroll along the water’s edge. The passenger terminal remains a working structure. There are cargo and customs facilities, a baggage hall and associated maritime amenities. Restaurants open onto two major public spaces making this one of Sydney’s prominent urban experiences.

In 2000, another upgrade was commissioned to enhance the existing passenger terminal facilities, increase public access and utilisation, especially on non-ship days, create a one-way traffic system to simplify existing traffic problems and maximise commercial opportunities with the addition of cafes, restaurants and retail spaces.
