Metropolitan is eight apartment buildings of 343 apartments occupying an entire block in City West, Canberra
The project provides a density and scale of urban living previously unseen in the Capital. The project was the first project completed in the redevelopment of City West. It was, therefore, a driver of urban design elements for the reinvigoration of that part of the city. Elements include corner towers fronting significant avenues, hard urban edges to all street frontages – with multiple building entries to enliven the street level – and a central Mews of low scale fine grained buildings, which now links with adjacent more recent developments. The eight buildings are clustered in two halves, each surrounding an elevated landscaped courtyard.
The scale of the buildings to the east and west has been kept lower to maximise the solar penetration into these vital outdoor spaces. Project amenities include a twenty metre lap swimming pool and gymnasium. The pool is elevated one level above London Circuit with views to City Hill. Access to these facilities is both internally and externally from the two elevated landscaped courtyards – Beach and Forest – which are linked by an elegant glazed steel bridge above the Mews.
Apartment living is provided by four different dwelling types – double height, single level, penthouse and cross-over. This provides over sixty different apartment configurations which maximise the utility, potential views and best respond to their location within the overall development. The design provides significant natural ventilation and amenity. Adaptable apartments are provided in two of the buildings. This vibrant residential anchor with its diverse formal languages, textures, colours and scales is a valuable addition, bringing life to a once underutilised quadrant of central Canberra.
