Maitland is one of the fastest growing Local Government Areas in NSW, with a thriving and diverse economy at the gateway to the Hunter Valley. Located approximately 40km inland, Maitland experiences surprisingly cold winters and very hot summers. The local aquatic centre has an existing 50m outdoor pool, one the many that were built across Australia following World War 2. The growing population and inability to open the pool all year due to the cold winters lead to the development of a new internal pool. BVN undertook a high level site masterplan to locate this new facility and followed this with the concept, detailed design documentation and site services for the project.
The building is a simple object in the landscape, visible from the Hunter Valley Highway, rail and Maitland Park. A cranked roof form and undulating awning distinguish it as a public facility and investment by the community. Within the new building is an 8-lane, 25m long heated pool with universal access ramp and hoist, bleacher seating and surrounding concourse. Highly efficient heating and filtration plant is located to form an acoustic buffer between the pool hall and busy road, with high level glazing to allow natural light to bathe the space. The pool hall opens out to the lawns and existing 50m pool, allowing patrons to seamlessly move between the indoor and outdoor pools. During winter, the 50m pool s closed and separated, allowing safe annual access to the new indoor pool. Existing pool amenities and change rooms have been refurbished as part of the project, servicing the entire complex.
