Description

Over 80 Defence buildings, including offices, workshops and logistical facilities, designed with consideration to functionality and climate.

Lavarack Barracks, located on a 400 hectare site in Townsville, is home to the Australian Army’s 3rd Brigade and a number of supporting units. BVN Donovan Hill has been responsible for the design of many stages of the Lavarack Barracks redevelopment since 1999, with stage 4 of the redevelopment project including new offices, workshops and logistical facilities for the 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment (3 CER) and 4th Regiment, Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (4 REGT, RAA) Precincts. This large scale project is made up of over 80 smaller and some more substantial buildings, and the re-use of existing structures. Early detailed analysis on both precincts revealed cost saving opportunities to revitalise and re-use older facilities with existing footprints that met the demanding user requirements.

All facilities are designed to reflect their working functions and the tropical climate and landscape in which they operate. Workshops provide functional, cost effective and robust architectural solutions that cater for aged equipment and vehicles, while also allowing for a combination of future vehicle fleets and equipment upgrades.

The project involved the delivery of many building types within the highly controlled financial, functional and procedural constraints of the Commonwealth Government’s procurement processes. The end result is a successful complex of simple execution that reflects the Department of Defence’s ongoing commitment to well-designed facilities to support its personnel.
