Lavarack Barracks, located near Townsville in northern Queensland, is one of the Australian Army’s largest bases.

The Barracks are home to 3rd Brigade and a number of supporting units. The 1999 Lavarack Barracks Redevelopment masterplan provides guidelines for multiple stages of development to the base.

Stage 3 of the redevelopment includes new working accommodation for 3rd Brigade, 1 and 2 RAR Infantry Batallions and other Land Command force elements and Training Command Units.

BVN has played a significant architectural role in multiple stages of the redevelopment project. Careful design and implementation of an architectural expression and character appropriate to the function of the facilities has been developed and appropriately synthesised with the landscape and to provide the physical matrix and background to tropical Australian Army life.
The redevelopment projects have made a significant contribution to the new identity of Lavarack Barracks and its future in northern Australia. The architectural and urban design solutions developed for the project define Lavarack Barracks as a place of significance within Defence and the broader community. The redevelopment has been seen by Defence as a benchmark of excellence in the provision of facilities for working accommodation.
