Creating a single civic centre that provides an efficient and sustainable Council headquarters
On a long, narrow site between the railway line and main street of Morwell in the Latrobe Valley, the Latrobe City Corporate Headquarters unites previously disparate council offices from the townships of Traralgon, Moe, Churchill and Morwell into a single, central civic centre that creates an efficient, sustainable headquarters for the Latrobe City Council.
With a significant street presence, the headquarters is a catalyst to the revitalisation of the regional centre, bringing with it the potential for local community activities that will be promoted both within the building and the new Civic Square created as part of the development.
The building is designed as a flexible office environment incorporating communal and civic facilities relating around a new city square. A central pedestrian street links the workplace and council facilities admitting daylight into the heart of the building.
The workplace design integrates collaborative plan work environment with multi use training and meeting facilities. Local materials are used extensively in the building construction to enhance the building’s civic nature. The identity of the building is largely defined by the graduating palettes of the vertical sunscreen blades along the south elevation.
Latrobe City Council Corporate Headquarters is designed to achieve a four star environmental rating with mixed mode ventilation.
