Kingston Library by BVN takes things just that little bit further – and in a way that seems right for Canberra, whose suburban shopping precincts act as hubs for the local community

Creating a vibrant, inviting and easily accessible facility for the Kingston community

The Kingston Library provides a contemporary take on this traditional community institution. It is a public ‘shop front’ library located deliberately within a busy retail strip in the Kingston town centre. This drop-in accessibility helps to increase library patronage and integrate it with the local community. The library contains in excess of 20,000 items with access to the ACT Libraries network collection as required.

The Library fit-out is designed to create a bustling, energetic, open and engaging space. A carefully designed joinery unit down the centre of the space contains the library functions, including borrowing, membership, magazine and newspaper reading, internet access and computer game consoles. This organising element enables ease of way-finding for the public. Fixed shelves are located along the periphery with movable shelves located centrally. Adjacent to the new entry is an intimate reading area, slightly separated from the library proper. A curved, up-lit plywood ceiling above the entry and joinery spine enhances the warmth of the face bricks, timber floor and joinery. BVN coordinated the mechanical, electrical and data services – challenging within the confines of a retail tenancy dating from the 1960s – to ensure a fully integrated design solution.

The design maximises the number of items available whilst creating an open environment, suitable for community events, book readings and other activities
