Description
Providing new accommodation for the Defence Intelligence Training Centre at Kokoda Barracks.
The building comprises two double storey wings arranged about a central atrium, and includes seven separate secure areas, which accommodate TS and TSSI activities, in the form of training rooms, syndicate rooms, offices, audio secure lecture theatre and conference rooms, and specialist spaces such as Imaging, as well as common rooms, amenities and HQ/Admin functions.
All secure areas open into a controlled access central atrium, which is roof lit and has a large glazed end wall opening onto a raised terrace area, which provides breakout for occupants without the need to leave the controlled zone encouraging social interaction and providing visual relief.
Working with their Defence security authority and the security consultant, the team was able to incorporate large areas of external glazing to some secure areas. The building is designed to be flexible and extendable, the success of which is evidenced by the fact that an additional two bays were added to the building after completion of working drawings, with minimal impact on internal planning.
The building is located on an ecologically sensitive site, and incorporates extensive and innovative ESD initiatives and technologies, such as thermal labyrinths, rainwater harvesting for potable uses, fresh air cycles, and night purging.
