Located on a dramatic elevated site with spectacular mountain views, this house is designed to provide both a hermetic retreat and to exploit its northern aspect and prospect in the northern part of Queensland's Sunshine Coast hinterland at Witta.

Intended for a single client with a passion for books and a significant art collection, the house is relatively modest in ambition and scale. Minimal means and a concern for low maintenance have also influenced the concept for a lightweight metal clad pavilion, lightly positioned on the site and arranged in plan and section to focus on specific views.

Finishes and detailing are simple and economical, allowing a backdrop for art and a foreground for views. The design also incorporates a significant sustainable design agenda, including solar power; substantial rainwater harvesting; waste water treatment; low energy lighting and appliances; low VOC finishes; plantation timber framing, floors and joinery; and excellent passive solar design with direct north south orientation and cross ventilation.

As a place for contemplation of nature, art and literature and occasional guest entertainment, this small house accommodates these varying demands in a comfortable and highly resonant relationship with this special site.
