The Brisbane Grammar School’s old gymnasium was one of the first gymnasiums built in Brisbane.
New facilities were required for the school to meet student and education authority expectations on the quality and variety of sport education. Important planning requirements and criteria agreed to with the school include: the provision of class rooms and laboratory to facilitate health and sports science learning; flexibility of spaces to accommodate changes in curricula and to provide as wide a diversity of sports and aquatic activities as possible; the provision of sufficiently large facilities to offer a significant physical challenge for the students.
The centre includes a sports hall, large enough to accommodate two regulation-sized basketball courts; a gymnasium with pit, mats and permanent equipment; an ancillary hall that functions in conjunction with the sports hall; an aquatic centre which includes a 25 metre 10-lane indoor heated pool suitable for water polo, class rooms and sport science laboratory.
This project set a new benchmark for indoor sports, recreation, community and multi-use facilities in Queensland
