The Beijing Shunyi Regatta Centre is part of the Beijing Olympic Aquatic Park, which was the International competition winning scheme for the Regatta Centre and White Water Park facilities for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Regatta Centre includes an Olympic standard 2.2 km regatta course, with a 4000 seat permanent spectator stand including lounge and restaurant facilities and 16,000 temporary seating stands provided on an isolated spectator island. The design of the Regatta stand has been inspired by the ‘hull’ of a dragon boat, which envelopes the spectators and gestures dramatically towards the water.
The Regatta Centre administration, athlete and boatshed facilities are located in a ‘twin hull’ integrated building facility which rests on the waters edge. With forms evocative of upside down boat shells, the building creates a dominant marker to the end of the regatta course.
Designs of the permanent start and finish tower facilities and multiple aligner huts embody the notion of visual markers or ‘Lanterns’ to the course. The Lanterns create a glowing pattern of light along the waters edge, connecting the facilities at either end of the regatta centre.
