Residential tower that responds to the heritage significance of the site and the spectacular harbour views
20-24 Alfred Street incorporates a 10 storey residential tower on the site of an existing 1970’s office block and the refurbishment and rear additions to two existing historic terrace buildings. The setting is of broad heritage and architectural significance as it provides the southern terminus of the built form edge of Milsons Point but also features prominently in the foreground of Sydney Harbour icons.
The apartment building is seen through the frame of the Harbour Bridge, and defines the promontory of Milsons Point in composition with its urban block, North Sydney Pool and the open space of Bradfield Park. Fourteen luxury apartments, a two-storey penthouse, ground level commercial space and three basement carparking levels are accommodated within the residential tower. The incorporation of the adjoining terrace buildings ensures each apartment has access to northern sun, balancing the dramatic views to the south.
The design was predicated on the ability to sub-divide the internal area according to varying share proportions of 14 individual investors.
The underlying basis of the design in this context provides a generosity of floor space, with an inherent flexibility to vary the arrangement of the living spaces or indeed the whole apartment. All the apartments enjoy the privacy, comfort and individual character of a conventional house, with the clarity, security, open interiors, and aspect associated with apartment living.
