In less than ten years, James Grose and, more recently, his partner Nicola Bradley have produced a distinctive body of work which has made a deep and at times provocative mark on Australian architecture. Their most recent honour, the Sulman Prize, awarded for the Architecture Studios at the University of Newcastle, is one of the major annual awards for Australian architecture.

In contemplating the projects which comprise this monograph, and knowing many others in reality, it is evident that Grose and Bradley are approaching their work with a convincing sense of purpose and direction. The issues which absorb them are clearly defined and engagingly explored. Each project reveals both substantial provocative gestures and subtle nuances which together go towards the making of an architecture which, on many levels of appreciation, both stimulates and delights.
