AECOM’s Brisbane offices designed by BVN Architecture won the State Award for Interior Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects Queensland awards announced in Brisbane on 24 June.

According to the jury ‘this office fit out provides almost 800 staff with a highly equitable working environment’.

They noted how views to the outside are maintained for all work spaces and how they and the generous breakout areas are all ‘interlinked cleverly with staggered voids, effectively connecting the office across five levels.’
In conclusion they stated that, ‘Excellent use of colour, materials internal planting and spatial variation create this impressive space capable of developing a rewarding office culture for the client.’

Mr David Kelly, BVN Principal said, ‘Workplaces are no longer just spaces where people come together to do work, they are spaces used to inspire and motivate staff to maximise their potential.’

According to Mr Kelly, AECOM needed a flexible workplace to enable a diverse range of work types to be carried out in a collaborative environment.

‘It’s all about keeping people at the heart of the project, designing a place that supports a community,” said David Kelly.

BVN also won a commendation in the Public Building category the Stage 4 Redevelopment of Lavarack Barracks just south of Townsville that earlier in the years was given the Building of the Year award in the North Queensland Regional Awards.

BVN Architecture has been responsible for the design of many stages of the Lavarack Barracks redevelopment since 2000 and this latest commendation now takes to 15 the number of prizes given to Lavarack buildings.

Lavarack Barracks is located on a 400 hectare site and is home to the Australian Army’s 3rd Brigade and a number of supporting units.
The Stage 4 Redevelopment includes new offices, workshops and logistical facilities, all designed to reflect their working functions and the tropical climate and landscape in which they operate.

According to Mr Kelly ‘Lavarack Barracks set a new benchmark for good design in defence projects back in 2000 and this latest commendation demonstrates the Department of Defence’s ongoing commitment to well designed facilities to support their personnel.’
